The Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Singapore-Cambodia International Academy (SCIA) of Singapore to provide vocational training to 1.5 million young Cambodians.
According to the Ministry’s statement, the policy, which was signed on Tuesday, will be implemented in August to support vocational training for 1.5 million young people.
Ith Sam Heng, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, stated that the signing of the MoU is an important contribution to the promotion and development of vocational skills of young people in the country.
According to the statement, Tan Wee Pin, Director of SCIA, said that the goal of this cooperation with Cambodia is to help elevate the professional skills of young workers to increase their capacity to meet the needs of Cambodia’s labor market.
"We already have a training program from Singapore, without having to rewrite the training program, we just provide training to the trainees, including the trainers from Singapore," said the SCIA principal.
Approximately 1.5 million poor and vulnerable youths will receive vocational training organized by the Ministry. As part of the agreement, the government will be responsible for all of the tuition fees and monthly stipends, said the statement.
However, the Minister stated that the Ministry needs more partners to support. Prime Minister Hun Sen recently instructed the Ministry and related institutions to cooperate in formulating national policies and vocational training for young people in poor and vulnerable families.
The purpose of the guide is to meet the needs of the labor market in Cambodia, as well as to improve their living conditions, the Ministry said. It added that this is also to achieve the national policy for Cambodia to become a high middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2025.
