The Ministry of Education Youth and Sports’ (MoEYS) Primary Education Department (PED) is organizing a five-day training session on early grade math for 1,050 educators in Kampong Thom province from November 26 to 30.
The training “Early Grade Math (EGM) Grade 1 Semester 1” is funded by the Government of Belgium with the aim of strengthening teachers who teach math in the early grades of primary school by equipping them with new teaching methodologies and classroom management techniques.
The training prepares teachers and mentors to implement the early grade math packages which are designed by MoEYS to boost early grade math teaching and learning.
Chan Sophea, Director of PED, said the early grade math (EGM) training, implemented in collaboration with VVOB organization, contributes to the Ministry’s core strategy focusing on strengthening primary school teachers to better support and teach students in grades 1, 2, and 3 in Khmer and mathematics.
“In addition to this training, which will be implemented in multiple provinces over the coming period, MoEYS also produced learning-support materials including videos for guardians and parents, to help their children at home,” he mentioned.
She believes that face-to-face training is the core capacity development for teachers while MoEYS also will assist in the contribution of training mentors and master mentors.
She added, “In addition, MoEYS – supported by VVOB – will train school-based mentors and master mentors. The mentors will provide mentoring to the teachers to help them implement the new techniques in the classroom.”
The training for teachers is provided by the Master Trainers. They have been trained by MoEYS experts with technical support from VVOB and financial support from the Capacity Development Partnership Fund (CDPF), said VVOB’s Country Programs Manager in Cambodia.
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Minister of Education for his trust in VVOB as a partner. In addition, I would like to thank PED, the Teacher Training Department, and the Education Quality Assurance Department for their efforts to implement MoEYS’ strategy to strengthen early grade math education in Cambodia,” she said.
Simultaneously with the implementation of the EGM training in Grade 1 and Grade 2, MoEYS is also finalizing Grade 3 content for future implementation. In addition, MoEYS is planning to produce Early Grade Math Standards, to help primary school teachers to better assess their learners’ understanding of EGM.
