Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was joined by Vietnamese and Cambodia officials and agencies for a meeting at Metfone to be briefed on the telecommunication company’s successes and socio-economic contributions during its 13 years of business in the kingdom.
Currently, Metfone – a brand of a member company of Viettel Group in Cambodia – is the largest telecommunications operator in the country in terms of subscribers, revenue and network, with a 45 percent market share reaching more than nine million subscribers and 60 percent market share in the number of mobile base stations.
Although the global telecommunications industry is saturated, Metfone continues to maintain its growth momentum in terms of revenue and profit and is valued at up to $1 billion. Metfone is currently one of the five largest taxpayers in Cambodia.
Reporting to the Prime Minister, Metfone presented its contributions to Cambodian society and people through community-based activities. This includes the universalization of telecommunications services in Cambodia, contributing to making the nation one of the fastest growing in the world.
It also boasts the best 4G coverage and speed in Southeast Asia. The rate of data customers reached 91 percent, of which 95 percent were 4G customers. This is similar to developed countries, such as Canada, USA, and Germany. Metfone has also created jobs for nearly 30,000 workers, with average incomes that sit higher than the national average.
In addition, Metfone has pioneered digital transformation for the government and ministries. Currently, Metfone has signed cooperation agreements with almost all ministries in Cambodia on transformation, including particularly important projects with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.
Metfone's education ecosystem has covered more than 300 schools nationwide, with more than 450,000 students benefiting from the digital learning environment. In the field of digital finance, Metfone's eMoney is currently Cambodia's largest e-wallet with more than 800,000 regular customers.
To promote Cambodia's digital economy, Metfone has built a digital infrastructure that ensures 95 percent of Cambodia's territory can access telecommunications.
During the visit, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh praised the results that Metfone has achieved, contributing to promoting the relations of "good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainability" between Vietnam and Cambodia, while also contributing to socio-economic development, creating jobs, and ensuring social security.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Metfone should continue to promote its role as an important bridge, contributing to fostering, consolidating and strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the two countries and their people. He added this will also create better space for Metfone to operate and contribute to promoting the 4th industrial revolution in Cambodia and Vietnam in the spirit of "harmonious benefits, shared risks".
Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group, said, "While investing abroad, despite many challenges, Viettel Group has always pursued the path of investment abroad. We are committed to always pioneering the digital transformation, ready to advise, support and accompany the Cambodian government, businesses and people to apply digital technologies and digital solutions to serve all social activities.
