US President Joe Biden landed in Phnom Penh on Saturday to attend the ASEAN Summit and hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Roads were blocked from Raffles Hotel Le Royal all the way to Phnom Penh International Airport as Biden landed, with local media outlets broadcasting live on social media amid tightened security. Stores along Russian Boulevard were also ordered to close.

Cambodian Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Chea Vandeth, and Foreign Secretary of State, Ouch Borith, were at the airport to welcome Biden as he disembarked Air Force One. Helicopters were also seen circling the capital’s sky.

US Ambassador Patrick Murphy was at the airport to receive Biden, along with a small group of American nationals who had gathered there to welcome their president.

According to the official schedule, Biden will deliver remarks at the annual US-ASEAN Summit and participate in a “family photo” with ASEAN leaders at Sokha Hotel.

Biden will also attend the East Asia Summit Gala Dinner, hosted by Hun Sen at Chroy Changvar International Convention and Exhibition Center.

In addition, Biden will hold bilateral meetings and a trilateral meeting with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan and President Yoon Suk-yeol of South Korea to continue enhancing trilateral cooperation throughout the Indo-Pacific.

The meetings will particularly focus on their joint efforts to address the ongoing threat posed by North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs, the schedule said.

Biden will then travel to Bali in Indonesia for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, where he will highlight the US’s commitment to this premier forum for economic cooperation, with countries representing more than 80 percent of the world’s GDP.

“He will work with G20 partners to address key challenges such as climate change, the global impact of Putin’s war on Ukraine, including on energy and food security and affordability, and a range of other priorities important to the global economic recovery and building a sustainable and inclusive global economy,” the schedule said.
