As a pioneer in Cambodia’s digital transformation, Metfone is continuing to invest in expanding the kingdom’s telecommunications network infrastructure with innovative modern technology to span the widest coverage area.

Metfone - a brand of Viettel Group - is currently one of the top five businesses with the largest contribution to the Cambodian Government's budget of more than $844 million.

After 16 years of presence in the country, Metfone has become the number one brand in the telecommunications field with more than nine million customers. This accounts for 43 percent of the telecommunications market share. In recent years, with drastic movements in the digital field, Metfone has played a pioneering role in Cambodia’s digital transformation.

Metfone’s pioneering mark

Internally, the company has built and implemented a comprehensive digital ecosystem with marketing, sales, and customer care activities. Currently, Metfone employees can sell goods from the mBCCS App and manage and update channel images from the Mstation App.

A total of 100 percent of Metfone's points-of-sale now use the Mdealer App to register information and scan sims. The platform, which is used for Mefone’s marketing, sales, and customer care activities, reaches more than 10 million subscribers and followers on Facebook, Youtube, Tiktok, Telegram, and CamID.

For outsourced services, Metfone implements many digital transformation strategies in various fields.

At a government level, Metfone has signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement to implement a digital transformation strategy with most ministries, including important projects with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Finance.

In the business community, Metfone is the first unit to create a network of information technology applications to help businesses connect and provide business support tools, especially during the Covid pandemic. B2B, digital and digital finance information technology solutions account for more than 10 percent of total revenue.

For individual customers, Metfone has brought the rate of data to 91 percent, of which 95 percent are 4G customers. Metfone's CamID super app launched in April 2021 and to date has a total of five million downloads, with one million regular users.

The super app aims to ensure all Cambodian citizens have ID, so it is not only Metfone subscribers who can use the CamID app. Other network subscribers can also register. This enables people to carry out public administrative procedures, such as acquiring birth certificates and driving licenses.

Metfone's eMoney is Cambodia's largest e-wallet, with more than 800,000 regular customers.

“Resonance to make a difference”

With the achieved results, Metfone plans a strategy to shift from operating as a pure telecommunications company to a telecommunications company using digital technology, with the philosophy of "resonance to make a difference" to carry out the mission of “creating a connected digital society”.

The importance of digital transformation was highlighted and excelled during the Covid-19 pandemic, and Metfone played a pioneering role in providing digital solutions to solve challenges for Cambodian society.

In 2020, when the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, Metfone immediately provided free data to all students when accessing online learning portals. The company also offered a 50 percent discount on Internet installation fees for students and teachers, and provided free support for telecommunications infrastructure as well as an online learning platform, with a scale of up to 500,000 users.

In the medical field, Metfone supported the Cambodian Ministry of Health by sending free text message updates on the Covid-19 situation to people. It also provided free packages to medical staff and doctors – those fighting the pandemic from the frontline.

Cambodians are also provided with a range of new services for home use, and incentives when recharging via eMoney application, transactions via e-wallets to limit travel, and cash transactions.

“In the coming years, besides the areas that have become strengths, we will shift our service provision into new areas, such as e-commerce and logistic, smart traffic, health, smart education, digital travel, game and Esport, the electronic lottery, and Pay TV (OTT TV),” said Cao Manh Duc, CEO of Metfone.

To achieve this, Metfone has relied on the strength of digital infrastructure. As a pioneer in Cambodia’s digital transformation, Metfone continues to invest in expanding its telecommunications network infrastructure using the most modern technologies, such as 5G, Narrowband IoT, big data, and artificial intelligence.

Metfone’s raft of sustainable and effective business activities have created stable jobs for more than 3,000 people, providing an average monthly income of more than $800. In addition, more than 30,000 indirect jobs have been created.

Metfone also actively accompanies the Cambodian government in sponsorship and charity activities. It has been at the helm of organizing many sponsorship and community events, such as the "Heart for Children" program to help disadvantaged children receive free heart surgery.

Other activities amounting to $117 million include reducing fees and providing support for online students, providing free Internet services to hospitals and the health sector, and accompanying Bayon TV to implement the program "It's Not a Dream" to find and reunite lost Cambodians. In addition, it sponsored the Cambodia Premier League football tournament.

Duc said, “With Metfone, volunteering comes from an open heart that is sincere towards the community. This is an indispensable part of our business orientation to create sustainable development for businesses in the new period. At the same time, it is a testament to the good feelings, attachment and sharing of the Vietnamese people to your country, contributing to tightening the friendly relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia."
