The Cambodian women’s U-22 football squad made history after securing a Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) first for Cambodia, making it into the semi-finals beating Singapore 1-0 on Saturday night at Phnom Penh‘s Smart RSN Stadium.

A Singaporean player made a mistake when they used a handball to push the ball inside the box and the host team was awarded a penalty.

Poeurn Kunthea scored the penalty during the 76th minute, sparking a wild frenzy from proud Cambodian fans. Cambodia will next play Thailand in Group B.

According to her previous matches, Kunthea has a good track record scoring penalties. She helped the Cambodian women's team score against Laos’ national team, securing 1-1 during a one-minute overtime goal in the Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship (AFF Women's Championship) in 2022.

During Saturday’s match, the Cambodian team pressed hard and had many chances to score but were blocked and saved by Singaprean defenders and the goalkeeper.

Singapore tried hard to manage the ball, but during the match Cambodia had better control over the ball, especially in terms of speed. The Cambodian team performed well during the match to secure a win.
