The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) on Wednesday announced it will provide NSSF cards to tuk tuk and motodop drivers, who can register to receive health insurance for a monthly contribution of 15,600 riel.

According to NSSF’s official Facebook page, it is responsible for managing and administering social security programs in Cambodia. This includes pensions, health insurance, and workplace injury insurance. This is funded by contributions from employees and employers in the private sector, as well as the government.

For many workers, particularly those in low-paying or precarious jobs, the NSSF offers a lifeline in times of need. It can help to alleviate the financial burden of unexpected medical expenses or compensate for lost income due to workplace injuries.

NSSF said it oversees several key programs that aim to provide social security protection to Cambodian workers. The pension program provides retirement benefits to workers who have contributed to the fund for more than 10 years.

The health insurance program provides coverage for medical expenses for workers and their families. The workplace injury insurance program provides compensation for injuries sustained at work.

Nhim Sopheap, a 55-year-old tuk tuk driver, said, “NSSF cards have a significant positive effect on my life and for many citizens, particularly those in low-income jobs. Having access to social security protection can provide medical expenses and for workplace injuries.

“It can also help alleviate the financial burden of unexpected events, such as accidents or illnesses, which can have a profound impact on families' financial stability,” Sopheap told Kiripost.

Sophal Pheap, a 46-year-old tuk tuk driver, added, “Previously, tuk tuk and moto drivers could register for NSSF cards, but now the NSSF allows us to register. It can be a necessary source of relief and security for poor citizens in Cambodia and for those who are on a low income. Like me, if I get an illness I can use this NSSF card at the hospital for medical expenses and can save money for family expenses.”

The NSSF stated it plays an essential role in providing social security protection to Cambodian workers. The fund has made significant progress in expanding its coverage and improving the quality of its services. NSSF has the potential to make a significant contribution to the welfare of Cambodian workers and people in the country, it said.
