The General Department of Taxation (GDT) held a meeting to discuss the provision of tax services, promotion of tax registration and fulfilment of tax obligations with regard to vehicles, according to an announcement made by the GDT.

On Wednesday, Ken Sambath and Heng Sok Samnang, of the GDT on behalf of Kong Vibol, GDT Director, held a meeting about tax registration and the fulfilment of tax obligations.

It was attended by the leadership of the Khan Tax Branch and relevant tax officials, as well as the private sector, including Chhun Kim Srun, President of the Cambodia Auto Dealer Association (CADA), and of 50 CADA members, according to the statement from the Ministry of Economics and Finance (MEF).

CADA and tax officials were invited to attend the meeting, which aimed to offer a deeper understanding of tax registration and the fulfilment of tax obligations of car dealers in Cambodia.

Sambath encouraged CADA members to participate in promoting and encouraging more members to participate in tax registration and fulfilling their tax obligations properly to ensure transparency and fair competition between operators in all car sales business, as highlighted in the statement.

The meeting also served as a forum to discuss how to solve challenges, find ways to encourage vehicle owners to register taxes and fulfil tax obligations, while also disseminating the laws and regulations related to these obligations. In addition, to answer any questions posed by CADA members.

The GDT said the meeting was organized as some business people remain confused about complying with tax obligations.

The meeting also included a presentation on "Tax Obligations for Car Buying and Selling Enterprises" by Po Piseth, Deputy Director of the Small and Medium Taxpayer Management Department.

Sambath stated that in accordance with Article 203 of the Tax Law, individuals must register with the tax administration within 15 days after starting economic activities or other activities, including the activities of institutions or organisations.

Individuals must also notify the tax administration within 15 days after a change of address, name, business object, transfer of vehicle, termination of business association management or tax officer of the enterprise.

Article 205 of the law states,

"The tax administration has the right to register all persons whom the law stipulates to register and do not come to register. In this case, the tax administration may set an effective date for registration."

The Deputy Director General highlighted a raft of benefits of tax registration for enterprises. These include various incentives in accordance with the government's tax policy, fair competition between businesses, and contributing to the payment of taxes to aid the nation’s socio-economic development.

At the meeting, members of CADA raised lively questions for discussion. This included knowledge of regulations, implementation and relevant suggestions.

Meanwhile, Sokhon requested the cooperation of CADA to provide a list of all members of the association who have already registered for tax so that the GDT can provide services to enable taxpayers to be more efficient.

Sambath stated that currently, there are 518 enterprises in the business of selling cars that have already registered for tax and are fulfilling their tax obligations in Cambodia.

He additionally called on leaders and members who participated in the discussion, including all car dealers who are not members of the association, to try to better understand the regulations, procedures, tax registration, and obligations, and encourage all car to register, and fulfil their duties, as stated in MEF’s statement.
