While studying for his Master’s Degree in Entrepreneurship in New Zealand, Sam Sakada fell in love with the sweeping natural scenery that surrounded him, and came back to Cambodia brimming with new ideas.

“The time I spent amidst New Zealand's pristine landscapes profoundly shaped my understanding of how communities can coexist harmoniously with nature while creating economic opportunities through tourism,” Sakada said.

“Returning to Cambodia, I brought with me not just a degree, but a vision imbued with the essence of environmental stewardship.”

One of the ideas to emerge from his overseas studies is Chumkiri Exclusive Camp, which sits on a remote patch of land nestled away in rolling hills on the border of Kampot and Takeo provinces.

After finding the land in 2019, the camp opened its doors this year, offering guests the chance to trade in urban life for forest adventures. In fact, it’s so switched off that there isn’t any mobile signal or electricity supply.

Developing the ultimate retreat

“I've always felt a profound connection to nature, a sense of peace that only comes when you're surrounded by the serene whispers of the earth,” said Sakada.

“The hustle of city life, with its relentless noise and relentless pace, has often felt overwhelming. The pollution, both of the air we breathe and the constant barrage of sensory overload, seemed to be suffocating the very essence of my being.”

In his quest for solitude, Sakada started exploring rural Cambodia and discovered that despite the rich forests and vast natural landscapes, there was a lack of tranquil spaces where he could disconnect and immerse in nature.

“It struck me. Why not create such a space myself? I envisioned a camp that is not just a temporary shelter but a nurturing space for the soul. A place that honors the local culture and heritage while protecting and integrating with the environment.”

Sitting on the banks of a river perfect for swimming in, the camp site serves as a transformative retreat for gatherings of families and friends, or organizations wanting off-the-grid team building without any digital distractions.

“The heart of Chumkiri lies in promoting mindful living, creating lasting bonds, and building a legacy of tranquility that resonates with future generations. Here, we embrace simplicity, championing a culture that values stillness and community over the relentless pace of urban life,”

There’s the option to set up camp on the grass and sleep under the stars. Alternatively, there’s a sheltered area for rainy nights. Nearby, sits a covered cooking and socializing area, with bonfires and barbecues on hand for the evening’s fun and games.

Nurturing ecotourism

Sakada has grand visions for the camp that are driven by his passion for sustainability and ecotourism. As business grows, he wants to involve the local community more to ensure they also reap the rewards.

“I saw this camp as a tapestry woven with threads of sustainability, eco-consciousness, and the profound human need for connection, not just to each other but to the land we walk upon,” he said.

“The idea was to create not just a retreat from the world but a blueprint for a new way of interacting with it, a village where one could live, work, and grow in harmony with nature.”

To Sakada, ecotourism isn't just a form of travel. “It's a commitment, a philosophy that guides how I engage with the world. It's about exploring this planet responsibly, ensuring that the footprints I leave on the trails and in the hearts of local communities are light and beneficial.”

And it is this ethos that Sakada has made the heart of Chumkiri Exclusive Camp,where guests can embark on intrepid treks that snake up mountains and deep into the surrounding jungle, refresh in thundering waterfalls, or while away the day next to the river.

“In essence, Chumkiri Exclusive Camp is more than a project; it's a piece of my heart, a manifestation of my deepest yearnings, and an invitation to others who share this vision of a life less ordinary, more connected, and profoundly beautiful,” Sakada said.

“My passion for sustainable living is woven into the fabric of Chumkiri Exclusive Camp, a project that mirrors my commitment to preserving the tranquility of natural habitats while offering immersive, eco-friendly tourism experiences.”

Entrepreneurial journey

Sakada’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2011 with the inception of SmallWorld Venture. The initiative started life as a collaborative workspace for budding entrepreneurs.

However, it quickly evolved into a crucible for investment and support for innovative startups. “We've nurtured an ecosystem where seed equity investments help turn fresh ideas into reality, supporting a new generation of businesses,” Sakada said.

In addition to urban entrepreneurship, Sakada’s passion for driving sustainable and eco-friendly ideas are an entrenched part of SmallWorld Venture’s fabric. It is also involved in rural ecovillage development and long-term land management.

“We stand at the intersection of startup culture and rural rejuvenation, embracing projects that range from high-tech ventures to the sustainable development of the countryside,” Sakada added.
