The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has urged the capital and provincial governors to intervene and facilitate the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Expressway project study.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, China Road and Bridge Company will shortly begin a study on the expressway between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

“The Ministry of Public Works requests the governor to intervene and coordinate with the relevant units and local authorities in the jurisdiction to smoothly undertake a study on the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Expressway project with the Chinese Bridge and Road Company,” a statement said. “The study will start soon."

The Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Expressway will cross the cities of Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, and Siem Reap.

It is the third expressway project, following Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville and the Phnom Penh-Poipet expressways.

The Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway is the first expressway in Cambodia, costing $2 billion and beginning construction in June 2019. In addition, it is a cooperation between Cambodia and China under the Belt and Road Initiative.
